Tech giants like Amazon Interview often make lists of top employers. But how do such companies select employees – and especially managers? Here are some top amazon interview tips based on the experience of the company’s executives. (True, they say that soon, instead of interviews, all leading companies will have trials and tests).

Unlike most companies, where interviewers are free to ask any questions they deem important, in Amazon’s Bar Raiser hiring process, interviewers are assigned specific, objective data to collect, focusing on Amazon’s leadership principles.


10 Amazon Interview Tips

1. Learn the Amazon Leadership Principles.

Over the years, countless people have asked me how to prepare for Amazon interviews, and I’ve always directed them to focus first on learning and understanding Amazon’s Leadership Principles (LP). This may sound cliché, or possibly misleading, since in most companies a list of corporate values ​​or principles is pointless PR. They sound good, but they don’t really mean anything. 

Amazon  interview is different from other companies in this regard. Their 16 LPs are integrated into every decision and every process – starting with the recruiting process. The criteria for hiring and not hiring are based on an assessment of each candidate (you) exceeding, meeting, or falling short of each leadership principle. 

Unlike exams like the ACT, which may ask you to solve an endless variety of questions, the Amazon interview exam is limited to 16 topics. As you prepare, take time to think about what questions you would ask if you tried to elicit working examples related to each principle. The more time you spend researching these principles and thinking about how to put them into practice, coupled with the examples you’ve done in your career, the better prepared you’ll be.

2. Write down examples of work you have done in the past on each leadership principle. 

Besides being an open book test, it is also an open note test. Coming up with detailed, thoughtful examples of all 14 leadership principles isn’t something you want to rush out in front of an interviewer. Not only is there nothing wrong with having detailed interview notes in front of you, but it also shows that you are serious and prepared. Writing down your answers will force you to recall good examples and capture details.

Every Amazon interviewer is trained to interview using behavioral interviewing techniques. What is a behavioral interview? This is an interview method based on the candidate’s past work experience. Instead of asking brain teaser questions (like how many windows are in a building in Chicago), open-ended questions (what are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?), or hypothetical questions (how would you improve Amazon interview Alexa?). The behavioral interview is the best predictor of future performance because it is based on past performance.

In behavioral interviews, each question begins with “Give me an example of a time you’ve done X?” where X refers to one of the 14 LPs. For example, if an interviewer was assigned an LP of “hold to the highest standards”, they would ask a question such as “Tell me you found opportunities to improve a process, product, or service that you thought wasn’t good enough time and how did you improve it? of?” Do this for all 14 LPs and see my list of example questions at the end of this document.


As you complete the second step, you need to remember a method called the STAR method. The most skilled and experienced Amazon interviewers don’t simply ask you a question, dutifully record your answer, and then move on to another topic. They will ask probing follow-up questions to really understand how you behave and lead in the examples provided. They will do this by using the STAR method. STAR is an acronym for Situation, Task, Action, Result. In short, the interviewer needs to fully understand the situation you, your company or your team are in, your role in the project/problem, the actions you take and what the (measurable) results are.

By learning about STAR, you can prepare and stress test your responses before the interview. The winning answers for ticking each box in STAR are as follows:

S: The situation is complex and the stakes are high for your company/team/department.

T: You (the candidate) are responsible or primarily responsible for all or at least most of the project/issue/program, while collaborating effectively with other team members.

A: You have taken meaningful actions that demonstrate your strength or mastery of one or more Amazon interview LPs.

R: You persevered to overcome obstacles and challenges that ended up having a significant impact on your company/team/department, and you cite specific financial or customer metrics in terms of absolute and percent change/rate. 

In other words, make sure you choose the right example and share the right details in your example to tick each box for STAR

4. Be concise  

If you give lengthy answers to each question, sure One thing that annoys you. Don’t speak in long sentences and tell long stories about your past exploits that take up allotted interview time. Nothing is more offensive to an interviewer than a candidate who gives a long and rambling answer but doesn’t answer the question directly. Make sure your answers are concise (1-2 minutes) and have a clear beginning, middle, and end. If the interviewer wants and needs more information, they will investigate. They ask for better than frustrating the interviewer and needing to cut you off.

Once you’ve figured out your examples, practice them while recording so you can both time yourself and hear your voice.

  1. Prepare clear and well-organized examples.

as you prepare your answers. Make sure to have organized responses ready. For example, when you describe actions (as part of STAR) that you took to overcome a particular obstacle, break things down into a list. For example, “I have identified four important workflows that need to be done.

1) Align with the team on product details,

2) Write a detailed requirements document,

3) Create a detailed project timeline agreed to by engineering,

 4) Work with us of the CEO together to review the detailed plan for approval before starting work.”

Using a list in your example is a good way to 

  1. a) make it easier for the interviewer to follow your line (which, by the way, is not easy )
  2. b) Demonstrate structure and clarity of thought in your work and thinking. 

Also, don’t be afraid to ask a clarifying question if you’re unsure or unclear about the question the interviewer is asking you. It’s far worse to “guess” on a question because you might give an answer that doesn’t solve the problem. 

6. Get to know Amazon . 

A job is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your life. Don’t make this decision lightly. You are the best judge of what is best for your company and culture. If you enter a company that fits your culture, feels challenged, and has the opportunity to grow, you will thrive. If you don’t really embrace your corporate culture (but you accept the job because of the money, free drinks, and snacks, or what it looks like on your resume), you’ll inevitably get frustrated and go to the next company. 

PS I hear you about free drinks and snacks – I have a hard time resisting them too.

Every company culture is different. How Amazon interview culture works is up to you. Take the time to do proper research on the company. Also, if you don’t do your homework before the interview, it will show (trust me!) that your odds of getting the job are significantly lower. 

Here are some recommended research Amazon interview Tips before you interview at Amazon (or any company):

  • Use/try/test the company’s product or service for yourself. Read all product reviews. You should have an opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of the company’s products and services based on your first-hand experience. Ideally, you should also make sure you understand your competitors’ products as well.
  • Read the latest articles, books, news and financial reports about the company. Make sure to have a basic understanding of the company’s history and the opportunities and challenges they face today.
  • Connect with current and past employees, offer to buy them a coffee and pick their brains. Ask them what it’s like to work there, what’s expected of you, and the highs and lows of the job. Ask them about any/all leadership principles, especially those that you don’t know how to define or how to apply in practice.
  1. Ask thoughtful questions. 

A typical Amazon interview will last an hour. During the last 10 to 15 minutes of each interview, you have the opportunity to ask questions. Use this time wisely. The worst thing you can do is say you don’t have any questions, or ask questions to prove you haven’t done your homework. Please don’t ask questions like “Does I look suitable for this role based on this interview?” Or “Have I solved all your problems?” Anyone who tells you you should ask these questions has no idea what they’re talking about. They show that you desperately need the job. Instead, prove you’re shrewd and discerning when choosing a company that’s a good fit for you and your career aspirations.

Asking the right questions will not only increase your perceived value as a candidate, but will ensure you have the information you need to decide if this is the right company and job for you. 

Use this time to ask questions that will help you make a decision (if you get a job offer). Think about which factors are most important to you and ask exploratory questions based on the research you’ve done. For example, you might have specific questions about how the company gets things done. Ask for clarification on details about the department, product, strategy, or challenges you will face in applying for the position. Seek to understand how your career and work progress unfolds. If you can’t think of anything, at least ask everyone why they joined Amazon and what they find most rewarding and challenging about working at Amazon interview. 

  1. Don’t be afraid to raise the bar. 

A unique element of interviewing at Amazon interview is that one of the people interviewing you will be someone who raises the bar. Bar Raisers are Amazon interview process experts who will lead the debrief discussion on your candidacy after the interview is complete. They exist to ensure that the Amazon interview and decision-making process is followed and to help hiring managers make better decisions about whether to hire you. Standard raisers can work in any function or department in the company, usually they are not in HR or recruiting. 

You can often spot “Bar Raisers” because they work on a different team or department than other interviewers. 9. Think clearly.

If you are asked for a writing sample, be sure to focus on clarity of thought. You will not be graded on the content of the document itself, but on your ability to write clearly and concisely. less is more.

The old adage “state, support, conclusion” is the key to combining rational arguments. Demonstrates how to take seemingly unconnected data points and connect them for readers. Avoid flashy language and descriptions and instead focus on data and facts to describe things. That said, don’t write, “…the voice assistant market is huge and growing rapidly.” Instead, “…the voice assistant market is estimated to have a global TAM of $300 billion in 2021, up from the previous year 22%.”

Consider adding some FAQs or FAQs at the end of the document. A good FAQ shows that you understand the questions and concerns your audience is most likely to have. 10. Extra…a  

A post-interview thank-you note isn’t necessary, but it doesn’t hurt. If you choose to do so, do so now and write something specific about your conversation with the interviewer (e.g. “I liked our discussion/debate about the most important metrics to consider when managing subscription services”). 

If you feel like you screwed up on a question in the interview, say it, say what you missed, and share what you wish you had said in the interview. More than once I can think of a follow-up like this that changed my answer from “no” to “yes” to a candidate.

Get to know your interviewer. If the recruiter tells you (in advance) who will be interviewing, check them out on LinkedIn ahead of time to find out what their role is and if you have any connections or interests.
